Back then, in 1887, building a rail line into Indian Territory, the Santa Fe railroad established a water and coal station for steam engines. Edmond was the highest elevation in Oklahoma County. Building on that point allowed the trains to accelerate downhill traveling in either direction while leaving the railroad station. Later, the station was named for Edmond Burdick who was the Santa Fe Railroad traveling freight agent. In August 1889, in Edmond, the first public schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory was completed. As a historic monument, on Second Street between Boulevard and Broadway, still stands the schoolhouse open to the public. In 1889, the first church built was St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on the corner of East First and South Boulevard. Though later relocated to another site, the congregation exists today. Wasting little time to establish education, in December 1890, the territorial legislature established three universities.
